Hi all! I would like to take this chance to welcome Malcolm White, our newest Media Relations intern to our team. Malcolm will be here until April and we couldn't be happier with his work thus far. Check out his story below!

Let me start off by saying I am so excited about the opportunity I was granted to intern at MediaSource this spring semester. My name is Malcolm White and I graduate in May of this year with a degree concentrating on Public Relations and Organization Communication. Looking back on the last four years of my life, sometimes I have to ask, “how did I get here?”. I couldn’t have imagined my college career ending on this note, but I couldn’t be more pleased with my current predicament.

I did not know myself well coming out of high-school and I was not sure what I wanted to do with my life. Anybody in my life during those teenage years knows that there was one thing that I did better than anything else: take a position on an issue and argue passionately on its behalf. After many discussions with family and mentors, I elected to study political science with the intention to enroll in law school post graduation in pursuit of a political career down the road.

It was my long-term desire to become a politician that led me to the world of PR and communications. I figured that since political figures were always sticking their foot into their mouth, that it’d be wise of me to take courses in public relations as precautionary measures. At that time in my life, I only understood Public Relations to be crisis and image management. I changed my major to PR my junior year after realizing that I hated reading long court opinions and was far more interested in the complicated world of brand management, specifically the components involving relationship building and strategic client handling, the art of persuasion and concerted timing.

I am very involved on my campus community and claim membership in several student organizations--for two, I am the president. Over the past two years, I created new roles where I could begin to practice the skills that I was learning in the Capital classrooms: I began creating and circulating original newsletters; I learned audio-visual editing and started to produce short videos; I designed and conducted public relations and social media campaigns for my different communities; and I hosted conferences and events on a wide range of topics. Little did I know that I was actually falling in love with the brand journalism mindset that we employ here at MediaSource!

When I came in for my interview at MediaSource, I was very pleased to see all of the awards on display for excellence in PR work. As Shannon, Allison and Kevin talked to me about what the company did, I knew in my heart that it was a fit and I just prayed that they felt the same way too. The small staff is awesome. This is the ideal make-up of team that I want to work for--close-knit and personal. It’s fast paced but efficient, intense but spirited, disciplined yet organic. I’ve only been here for a few days and I’m already knee-deep into exactly the type of PR environment that I want to be in.

I couldn’t be happier with this internship placement. At the end of my internship, I know that I will be more confident than ever about graduating and entering the job market. I truly believe that MediaSource will be the best learning experience I will have had, when it’s all said and done. I am so excited to contribute and be a part of the team.
