MEDIA RELATIONS ASSISTANT - Job Description
A media relations assistant provides media relations support, with a focus on researching media contacts, developing news media relationships and pitching stories to the media. They will also provide administrative support to the MediaSource team.
Only those candidates who are willing to and/or comfortable with aggressively pitching news stories via email, phone, in person visits and other creative tactics to the news media and building relationships should apply.
Bachelor’s degree in public relations, broadcast journalism, interactive media or communications.
Experience in a public relations firm as well as using social media in a corporate environment is desired.
-Support the media relations efforts for a variety of projects.
-Media outlet research and media contact development for national media outlets including websites, bloggers, print (magazines and newspapers), TV and radio.
-Under the direction of a supervisor, will execute pitching and follow up including story idea generation, pitch drafting, working with media lists, researching topics, handling outreach, coordinating follow up and compiling updates to the client, as well as analyzing tracking/ROI results.
-Opportunity to take more ownership including strategy for media targets, press materials and pitches.
-Handle media kit compilation and media distribution of multimedia elements, coordination of digital PR elements, project coordination and other administrative support.
-Goal oriented and competitive in spirit.
-Good knowledge of the PR industry with the ability to determine what is a potential news story.
-Experience in pitching stories and writing materials for news media.
-Has understanding of current web trends, online news practices, and SEO.
-Has ability to strategically use social media for PR.
-Familiar with anatomy of a newsroom and journalist's goals, deadline structures and demands and confident in reaching out to the news media using a personable approach.
-Networker - comfortable reaching out to current content users and new contacts via a combination of telephone, email and social media.
-Comfortable proofreading materials with grammar, spelling, punctuation, AP style, length and messaging in mind
-Excellent technical and analytical skills and be comfortable working with spreadsheets and graphs.
-Success in this position requires the ability to take initiative and ownership of responsibilities and tasks assigned.
-Must be a quick learner who is a self starter with the ability to be assigned tasks and complete them independently.
-Good organizational skills and attention to detail with ability to keep on track with goals and duties and update internal staff on a regular basis of progress.
-Must have the ability to work on multiple projects at once and be comfortable with multi-tasking and meeting deadlines.
-Since work focuses on ongoing projects, must have excellent follow through skills with the ability to meet deadlines and complete work without reminders from management.
-Ability to adapt to change in requests and direction.
-Comfortable in environment which uses honest, direct, authentic communication.
-Shows judgement to ask questions, voice concerns and offer suggestions for the success and efficiency of projects.
