We've had a great first week with our latest summer Media Relations Intern, Erin Golden. Erin joins us from Ohio University and we can't wait to "brand journalize" her! Get to know her a little better in her first MS blog.

The following blog was written by Erin Golden, Media Relations Intern

Coming from Ohio University and a college as competitive as the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, it’s sometimes easy to get swept up in the crowd, play follow-the-leader, or walk in the footsteps of others who succeeded before you. When I started as a freshman, I thought writing was my passion. I wanted to major in Magazine Journalism and write for a glamourous magazine after I graduated. After a year and a half of being a News and Information Major, I realized that it wasn’t only writing that was near and dear to my heart - it was people. It was conversation. It was understanding what people want, how they best communicate, and then helping them to achieve their goals. For me, this is what public relations is about; understanding your client and delivering to them what they need in the best form possible. After making the switch to PR, I have never once looked back. I’m so excited to continue learning about the industry at MediaSource this summer.

When deciding to intern at MediaSource, I knew that I wasn’t going to get the basic, stereotypical agency setting and view of PR! And it is one of the reasons I’m glad that I chose an agency that not only does great PR, but has their own version of what they do - brand journalism. I can only hope to learn more about this idea and be a “brand journalizer” by the time I complete my internship in August.

After just a few days of being surrounded by the MediaSource atmosphere, I am already starting to understand more about the unique work done here. Something I’ve noticed - the people move fast. They are constantly working; and working hard. The small, buzzing family environment makes this agency a great place to ask questions and LEARN. And isn’t learning what an internship is all about?

I am also a huge advocator of the idea that everyone learns best by doing. As a Spanish minor, I’ve studied the language since I was in the 6th grade. However, living in Spain for three months my sophomore year helped me learn more than I had in class over almost seven years. Needless to say I am excited to spend the remainder of my summer diving into whatever MediaSource wants to give me and grow as a PR professional. The uniqueness of brand journalism will give me an understanding of PR that will aid my future endeavours and I am thankful to get the chance to learn about such an upcoming area of my field.

I hope to employ what I learn this summer next fall when I start doing PR for Fluff Bakery in Athens, Ohio. This coming May of 2015, I will graduate from Ohio University with a degree in Strategic Communications, a minor in Spanish and a Global Leadership Center certificate. I hope to then delve into the field of public relations using all of my combined experience. I can’t wait to get started!
