Why I Chose PR

While most people during their adolescence years have no clue as to what they want to do when they’re older, I was always sure. My interests have always been broad- music, sports, movies, government, technology to name a few-but all in all, what I found most intriguing was the news. I began studying different broadcasters on my favorite shows and wondered who was behind the scenes of these major news stories and events, making people look good. I soon found out that this was the job of a public relations professional.

It was the advice of my middle school softball coach and father that would lead me to applying to, and eventually attending, one of the greatest journalism schools in the country: the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University. Here is where I would learn the essential skills at becoming a PR pro.

What I found out as an undergrad in Scripps is that public relations is about much more than just making individuals and organizations look good- it’s about building personal connections and relationships with the public. I’m a firm believer that the best journalism is done when a story not only identifies with the parties involved, but with everyone. The more relatable, the better the story.

How I Came Across MediaSource

I first came across MediaSource on a list of organizations that would be at my school’s college career fair this past spring. I was eager to attend as I was freaking out as to what on Earth I would be doing after graduation. The company was exactly what I was looking for, and I knew I just had to go.

The fair was on a Tuesday, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. To my inconvenience, I was scheduled to be in class at the same exact time. (Tuesday was my busy day.) I knew that I would have to make a run for it as soon as my last class was over and just hope that I would make it in enough time...Let’s just say I will always be grateful to my professor who let us out at 2:40!

As I quickly ran over to the student union in my black heels, which almost got caught in quite a few Athens bricks, I slapped on a name-badge with my resume in hand and made my way over to the MediaSource table. Turns out the run was well worth it!

Hope for the Future

What I look forward to most as a Media Relations Assistant here at MediaSource is learning how to take a client’s stories and turning them into more than just exposure for a health-related issue or topic, but also using it to help better the public’s life experiences. I’ve always loved encouraging people to live more aware and healthier lifestyles, and I believe the stories told by our team do just that. I am eager to embrace whatever task comes my way, and am even more ready to be a brand journalist!
