As my internship at MediaSource sadly comes to an end, I’ve come to understand what goes on behind-the-scenes at a highly-awarded company. If I’m asked in what I gained at MediaSource, I can sum up the knowledge I acquired in a matter of six things:
Brand journalism is king
I was introduced to the world of brand journalism and the positive effects it can have on a brand. The PR world changes quickly and you must implement new strategies in order to remain successful. MediaSource is an expert at brand journalism tactics. They create content that appeals to their target audience instead of promoting their brand, and help their clients do the same.
Research your competitors and potential clients
It’s important to identify the strengths and weaknesses of your competition to determine how to improve your business. Similarly, you should research potential clients and discover what their PR initiatives currently are. This will help you understand how your business can alter their strategies and enhance their success.
Have a social media strategy
In the PR world, you have to effectively use social media to reach your target audience. Reference what other companies are doing and implement your own ideas into a social media strategy to provide the best outcome.
Write like a PR pro
I had the opportunity to write MediaSource promo blogs for Lisa Arledge Powell’s articles on PR Daily, Ragan’s Health Care Communication News, The Outreach Marketer and other publications for PR news. In addition, I wrote a few blogs of my own that discuss how hot topics in pop culture relate to public relations. Through this experience, I improved my writing skills and recognized the importance of creating relevant content to attract your audience.
The little things matter
Research, organize and plan. Before my internship, I was aware this was necessary but MediaSource proved to me that a prepared company is a successful one.
Creativity is essential
This is a must. When you post on social media, write a blog for your website, research to benefit your business or perform any PR strategy, you need to be creative. Implement original ideas and discover what makes your brand unique to stand out from other companies in the industry.
