“Get me some coffee…and while you’re out, get everyone coffee!” *Grabs notepad and Starbucks menu translation dictionary*
That is how I was afraid my first major internship would be. Several hours a week of getting coffee, unjamming printers, and answering to the name “Intern Boy.”
Then I was hired as a Spring semester media relations intern by MediaSource, and my fears of having the stereotypical intern experience quickly vanished.
Time flies when you are learning about PR. I have taken some time to reflect on what has impressed me the most about working for MediaSource and why I am grateful.
I came up with five reasons why MediaSource blew my internship expectations out of the water:
1. They know my name!
Names might be hard to memorize. When you are the lowest man on the totem pole, it feels great when your coworkers look at you as a peer and learn your name.
2. They give me real tasks.
I’m not afraid of doing work, especially when I feel like it will make me a better professional one day. My managers give me tasks similar to the ones they work on. I really feel that my work benefits the company.
3. I am treated with respect.
Even with my admittedly limited experience, I am allowed to participate in roundtable meetings and voice my opinion. My contributions haven’t been laughed at once!
4. I am encouraged to be curious and my questions are always answered.
I have had so many opportunities to see how professionals pitch media outlets and use the tools they use. Questions I have are answered every time, and the advice is always sincere.
5. They let the intern in on the fun!
MediaSource has a reputation of being a fun place to work because it is. From Easter egg hunts to Super Bowl lunch parties and “lunch and learns” to happy hour, there is rarely a dull moment. Interns are always welcome.
I must say that I have enjoyed my time and I will be sad to leave MediaSource, but I am confident that the lessons I have learned will serve me well in the future. I can only hope my future bosses treat me so well.
